Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd)

Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries were the standard technology for many years, but today they are old technology and new laptops don't use them anymore. They are heavy and very prone to the "memory effect". When recharging a NiCd battery that has not been fully discharged, it "remembers" the old charge and continues there the next time you use it. The memory effect is caused by crystallization of the battery's substances and can permanently reduce your battery's lifetime, even make it useless. To avoid it, you should completely discharge the battery and then fully recharge it again at least once every few weeks. As this battery contains cadmium, a toxic material, it should always be recycled or disposed of properly.

Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)

Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries are the cadmium-free replacement for NiCad. They are less affected by the memory effect than NiCd and thus require less maintenance and conditioning. However, they have problems at very high or low room temperatures which might actually cause them to catch fire. And even though they use less hazardous materials (i.e., they do not contain heavy metals), they cannot be fully recycled (yet). Another main difference between NiCad and NiMH is that NiMH battery offers higher energy density than NiCads. In other words, the capacity of a NiMH is approximately twice the capacity of its NiCad counterpart. What this means for you is increased run-time from the battery with no additional bulk or weight.

Lithium Ion (Li-ion)

Lithium Ion (Li-ion) are the new standard for portable power. Li-ion batteries produce the same energy as NiMH but weighs approximately 20%-35% less. They do not suffer significantly from the memory effect unlike their NiMH and Ni-Cd counterparts. Also, their substances are less hazardous. Because lithium ignites very easily, they require special handling.

What's Battery Memory Effect?

Memory Effect

Also known as battery effect, lazy battery effect, crazy battery syndrome or battery memory, is an effect observed in nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries that causes them to hold less charge. It describes one very specific situation in which certain NiCd batteries gradually lose their maximum energy capacity if they are repeatedly recharged after being only partially discharged. The battery appears to "remember" the smaller capacity. The source of the effect is changes in the characteristics of the underused active materials of the cell. The term is commonly misapplied to almost any case in which a battery appears to hold less charge than was expected. These cases are more likely due to battery age and use, leading to irreversible changes in the cells due to internal short-circuits, loss of electrolyte, or reversal of cells.

How To Fix The Memory Effect

The simplest way to remedy the memory effect is to replace your nickel cadmium battery with a non nickel cadmium battery. You can find replacements on Amazon or at Limewit. You can also do a full discharge, from 100% to 0%, to your nickel cadmium battery multiple times to erase the memory effect.

Top 5 Laptop Battery Myths

Battery life is a key consideration for many of us when buying a laptop or that already own a laptop, and ending up with one that runs down in a matter of hours is very annoying to say the least. A number of misconceptions about how long laptop batteries should last, and how you should look after them, have been circulating for many years – we tackle some of the most common below.

Manufacturer battery life claims

Laptops come with headline battery life claims from the manufacturer which sometimes sound a bit too good to be true, and, according to product review websites like Cnet and Which.co, they definitely are. Experts often find battery life claims that are hours longer than the real story when they are put to the test in labs. For example, in a recent test the Acer Aspire Timeline U M3 claimed up to eight hours of battery life but the guys at Which.co got less than five browsing the web over a wi-fi connection. Claims are normally benchmarked results given under specific circumstances – take them with a pinch of salt.

"Disconnect the charger when the battery is full or it will damage it."

In short, you just don’t need to do this – laptop batteries will stop charging when they are full. The battery technology used is much cleverer than it’s ever been before. Compared to 10 years ago say, you can now trust that you can leave your laptop plugged in and it will take care of itself.

"You need to let the battery drain completely before charging again."

Again, this is just not true. Like the above, this myth still exists from older battery technologies which are no longer commonly used. If you’re using your laptop at home you should leave the laptop plugged in making sure it’s running at full speed with the laptop battery setting on ‘high performance’ (see ‘Check your power setting’ in the tips below).

"Laptop batteries can always be easily replaced."

There’s no getting away from the fact that the running time on a single charge will get shorter over time. After a few years you might want to replace the battery, but it’s not always as easy as it sounds. On a standard laptop it’s generally possible to replace the battery – costing between $45 to $130 US depending on your model  and the batteries quality– and they’re easy to fit at home. MacBook Pro's however, tend to come with built-in batteries which you won’t be able to replace yourself and normally require you to send your laptop back to the manufacturer to be fitted – whether or not you’ll be charged may depend on if you’re within your warranty.

Extended battery life claims

Not exactly a myth, but these claims are worth looking out for as they refer to how long the laptop battery will last under very specific circumstances (some might say rather unlikely ones), as opposed to the ‘normal’ claimed battery life. You might see battery life claims of weeks, or even up to a month on some laptops. The Asus ZenBook UX31E, for example, claims up to two weeks of ‘standby time’ with open files and other data kept safe in the memory. While the Acer Aspire S3 claims to conserve battery life for up to 50 days in Sleep mode. Though you can expect a longer battery life in sleep mode, the exact times claimed should be viewed with caution in terms of how they’ll stand up in a real life situation.

1. Check your power setting – your laptop should automatically switch to a power saving option when you’re running on battery but it’s worth checking. In Windows 7 or Vista, check that you’re not on a ‘High performance’ option in the Power Options settings.
2. Lower the screen brightness – this will reduce the rate of your battery’s power consumption. Brightness buttons will be marked with a "sun" icon.
3. Switch off Wi-fi and bluetooth – turning these connections off when you’re not using it can improve battery life.
4. Eject CDs and DVDs – the spinning disks can eat up battery power even if you are not using them.

Complete Guide: The Different Battery Types and Technologies

An electrical battery is one or more electro-chemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. The first battery is 2,000 years old and was discovered in 1938 by Wilhelm Konig in Iraq.

Since the invention of the first modern battery in 1800 by Alessandro Volta and especially since the technically improved Daniell cell in 1836 by John Frederic Daniell, batteries have become a common power source for many household and industrial applications.

According to a 2005 estimate, the worldwide battery industry generates US $48 billion in sales each year,with 6% annual growth.

Batteries can be broken down into three categories: Primary, Secondary, and Specialist.

Primary

Zinc/Carbon Battery [AA, C and D dry cell batteries]

It has Zinc and Carbon as electrodes and an acidic paste as the electrolyte.

Alkaline Battery [Duracell and Energizer batteries] 

It uses Zinc and Manganese dioxide in powdered form as the electrodes and an Alkaline, like Potassium hydroxide, as the electrolyte.

Lithium Cell [cameras, calculators and pacemakers]

Different Lithium cells exist because of its stability and low reactivity with a number of cathodes and non-aqueous electrolytes. The most common electrolytes are organic liquids.

Zinc/Air Cells [ pagers, hearing aids]

Amalgamated Zinc powder and Oxygen (Air) are the electrodes and Potassium Hydroxide is used as the electrolyte. This cell is lightweight, environmentally friendly and has a relatively low cost.

Secondary

Lead Acid Battery [automobiles, boats, motorcycles] ] 

Lead and Lead oxide are used as electrodes with a very strong acidic electrolyte. This is rechargeable. The modern variation is known as Gel Cell, where the electrolyte is in a gelatin form.

Nickel/Cadmium Cells (NiCd) [digital cameras, laptops, calculators] 

Cadmium and Nickel are used as electrodes and aqueous Potassium Hydroxide is used as the electrolyte. It is a rechargeable battery, but it is prone to the memory effect, where the cell retains the characteristics of the previous cycle. The image on the right shows the inside of a NiCd battery, showing the actual cells that make up the battery.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) [laptops, camcorders, mobile phones, power tools]

Rare-earth or nickel alloys with many metals are used as the electrodes and Potassium Hydroxide is used as the electrolyte. This is rechargeable and is also prone to the memory effect, but less so than the Ni Cad cells. The image on the right is of a NiMH laptop battery showing the actual cells inside.

Lithium Ion Cells (Li-ion) [laptops, mobile phones] 

Carbon compound and Lithium Oxide are used as electrodes and organic solvents are used as the electrolyte. Has a very good power to weight ratio, rechargeable, and no memory effect. This is the battery technology used on Limewit.com's laptop and netbook batteries.

Lithium Ion Polymer Cells [PDAs, handhelds, micro-models, MP3 players]

The electrolyte used is a polymer. It resembles a plastic like film which does not conduct electricity, but allows the exchange of ions. The dry polymer design offers simplifications with respect to fabrication, ruggedness, safety and thin-profile. There is no danger of flammability because no liquid or gelled electrolyte is used.

Silver-zinc cells provide the basis for both primary and secondary (rechargeable) batteries. In cells for primary batteries, the anode is zinc and the cathode is silver oxide. In cells for secondary batteries, the anode is zinc oxide and the cathode is silver. In both cases, the electrolyte is based on potassium hydroxide. The output voltage is 1.65 V. 

Sodium/Sulphur Cells [electric vehicles, aerospace applications such as satellites] 

Uses molten Sodium and Sulphur as electrodes and ceramic beta alumina as the electrolyte. This has been studied extensively for electric vehicles because of its inexpensive materials, high cycle life, and high specific energy and power. 

The problems with this cell are that the temperature has to be kept at 350C to keep the Sulphur in liquid form. This is achieved through insulation or heating through the cells own power. This lowers the energy density. The electrolyte is brittle and develops microfissures. Thus the liquid sodium and sulfur come in contact—with explosively violent results.
