Complete Guide: The Different Battery Types and Technologies

An electrical battery is one or more electro-chemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. The first battery is 2,000 years old and was discovered in 1938 by Wilhelm Konig in Iraq.

Since the invention of the first modern battery in 1800 by Alessandro Volta and especially since the technically improved Daniell cell in 1836 by John Frederic Daniell, batteries have become a common power source for many household and industrial applications.

According to a 2005 estimate, the worldwide battery industry generates US $48 billion in sales each year, with 6% annual growth.

Batteries can be broken down into three categories: Primary, Secondary, and Specialist.

Primary

Zinc/Carbon Battery [AA, C and D dry cell batteries]
It has Zinc and Carbon as electrodes and an acidic paste as the electrolyte.

Alkaline Battery [Duracell and Energizer batteries
It uses Zinc and Manganese dioxide in powdered form as the electrodes and an Alkaline, like Potassium hydroxide, as the electrolyte.

Lithium Cell [cameras, calculators and pacemakers]
Different Lithium cells exist because of its stability and low reactivity with a number of cathodes and non-aqueous electrolytes. The most common electrolytes are organic liquids.

Zinc/Air Cells [ pagers, hearing aids]
Amalgamated Zinc powder and Oxygen (Air) are the electrodes and Potassium Hydroxide is used as the electrolyte. This cell is lightweight, environmentally friendly and has a relatively low cost.

Secondary

Lead Acid Battery [automobiles, boats, motorcycles] ]
Lead and Lead oxide are used as electrodes with a very strong acidic electrolyte. This is rechargeable. The modern variation is known as Gel Cell, where the electrolyte is in a gelatin form.

Nickel/Cadmium Cells (NiCd) [digital cameras, laptops, calculators]
Cadmium and Nickel are used as electrodes and aqueous Potassium Hydroxide is used as the electrolyte. It is a rechargeable battery, but it is prone to the memory effect, where the cell retains the characteristics of the previous cycle. The image on the right shows the inside of a NiCd battery, showing the actual cells that make up the battery.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) [laptops, camcorders, mobile phones, power tools]
Rare-earth or nickel alloys with many metals are used as the electrodes and Potassium Hydroxide is used as the electrolyte. This is rechargeable and is also prone to the memory effect, but less so than the Ni Cad cells. The image on the right is of a NiMH laptop battery showing the actual cells inside.

Lithium Ion Cells (Li-ion) [laptops, mobile phones]
Carbon compound and Lithium Oxide are used as electrodes and organic solvents are used as the electrolyte. Has a very good power to weight ratio, rechargeable, and no memory effect. This is the battery technology used on Limewit.com's laptop and netbook batteries.

Lithium Ion Polymer Cells [PDAs, handhelds, micro-models, MP3 players]
The electrolyte used is a polymer. It resembles a plastic like film which does not conduct electricity, but allows the exchange of ions. The dry polymer design offers simplifications with respect to fabrication, ruggedness, safety and thin-profile. There is no danger of flammability because no liquid or gelled electrolyte is used.

Specialist

Silver/Zinc Cells [aeronautical and defense applications: torpedoes, guiding systems]
Silver-zinc cells provide the basis for both primary and secondary (rechargeable) batteries. In cells for primary batteries, the anode is zinc and the cathode is silver oxide. In cells for secondary batteries, the anode is zinc oxide and the cathode is silver. In both cases, the electrolyte is based on potassium hydroxide. The output voltage is 1.65 V.

Sodium/Sulphur Cells [electric vehicles, aerospace applications such as satellites]
Uses molten Sodium and Sulphur as electrodes and ceramic beta alumina as the electrolyte. This has been studied extensively for electric vehicles because of its inexpensive materials, high cycle life, and high specific energy and power.

The problems with this cell are that the temperature has to be kept at 350C to keep the Sulphur in liquid form. This is achieved through insulation or heating through the cells own power. This lowers the energy density. The electrolyte is brittle and develops microfissures. Thus the liquid sodium and sulfur come in contact—with explosively violent results.

How Many of Your Twitter Followers Are Real?

TwitterAudit – “exposing Twitter fraud since 2012″ — is designed to weed out the real followers from the fake ones and determine how genuine some accounts are about how they get their followers.

So we decided to try out the new service with @Limewit‘s 1,034 + followers.

Yay! Only 43 "fake" followers and a 96% Audit score. What's yours?

To get a better understanding of how this all works and what we can make of these results, we caught up with TwitterAudit co-creator David Caplan.

TwitterAudit debuted in beta just last week on August 2, after Caplan and his business partner David Gross had been working on it since mid-July. “It’s a side project for us and is still a bit rough around the edges,” Caplain said.

The idea for the service came about when the two were looking for ways to get more followers on Twitter. “It turns out it’s pretty easy to buy fake followers to beef up your numbers so we wondered whether people could be ‘audited’ as a way to expose ‘Twitter fraud,’” Caplain said. Most people assume that followers are earned, but that doesn't always turn out to be the case.

Caplan cites Klout and SocialBro as other programs that offer similar metrics. The differences are that Klout bases its “scores” on the activity of the account being examined, rather than the activity of its followers, and SocialBro gives great insight into the quality of followers.

With TwitterAudit, Caplan and Gross wanted to create a ”simple, free tool to quickly get an ‘audit score’ for any Twitter user and find out how many real, active followers they really have.”

Caplan confirms that the results are pretty valid from a statistical point of view. TwitterAudit takes a random sample of 5,000 followers (if the person has less than 5000, it looks at all of them) and examines their activity.

“This sample size might look small,” Caplan said. “For example if the person has millions of followers, but keep in mind that highly regarded polls taken in the USA only use a sample size of 1000 to gauge the entire country’s opinion!”

Still, he said that there can be a margin of error of 5-10%, and he’s working on a way to estimate that. Caplan also noted that the audit scores for users with followers in the millions can reflect the fact that about 30-50% of Twitter users are completely inactive. That’ll put a damper on things.

“I would say that any score above 40% should be considered good. Anything less and I would begin to worry.”

What's the Difference Between a Printer Toner & a Drum?

Brother DR-2000, DR-350 Printer Drum Cartridge
Printer Drum.
The drum in a laser printer is the central component. It's the device that receives the image from the laser and transfers it to the paper to produce the final print. Photocopiers also contain drums that work in much the same way. The difference between laser printers and copiers is how the image is transcribed onto the drum.

The printer drum is also known as a photoconductor by a few print accessory manufacturing companies such as Lexmark, Epson and Ricoh. Others refer to it as a drum cartridge, photoconductor kit, or photoconductor unit.

If you want to purchase a quality printer drum that won't burn a hole in your wallet, consider Limewit.com/printerdrumcartridges. There are also free shipping options as well as a competitive warranty offered on all products.

HP C4092A and Canon EP-22 Printer Toner Cartridge

Printer Toner
Toner is a powder used in laser printers and photocopiers to form the printed text and images on the paper. In its early form it was simply carbon powder. Then, to improve the quality of the printout, the carbon was melt-mixed with a polymer. Toner particles are melted by the heat of the fuser and bind to the paper.

In earlier machines, this low-cost carbon toner was poured by the user from a bottle into a reservoir in the machine. Current machines feed directly from a sealed laser toner cartridge.

Modern laser toner cartridges, intended for use in color copiers and printers, come in cyan, magenta, yellow and black

Twitter: The Phone Battery Killer

It's becoming a common theme to hear the cries of Twitter users regarding the short life span of their smartphone battery. Here's a good example, "If I didn't have twitter, instagram or any apps...my battery would last sooooo much longer," one Twitter user wrote.

When a phone is in the design stage, the engineers do not take into account how many apps will be running on the phone simultaneously, how many photos per day will be taken or uploaded to Instagram, how many tweets will be sent, emails read on Gmail, websites visited, videos watched, or how many Angry Bird levels will be successfully passed with three stars.

"We are basically given a list, from the software department, that informs us of what applications will come pre-installed with the phone. This is how we determine the expected battery life of the phone," says a cellphone engineer who wishes to remain anonymous.

The best solution to this dilemma?

You could use your phone less but we know that is a stretch. How about getting a second battery so that you never run out of "phone time."

Just charge the dead battery and by the time your new one is completely depleted, you can swap it for the newly charged one. One user complaints, "I carry my AC adapter but it is so bulky and takes 3 hours to fully charge my phone. Sucks!" A spare battery is small, light, and ready to go.

The New Apple Store Staircase Glass Design - Amazing!

Many of us have never gone up the famous Apple store glass staircase. Some for fear of it breaking as we take our first step but most simply because our local Apple store's do not have glass staircases to see or try.

Recently, Apple unveiled their newest version of the glass staircase at their flagship store in SoHo, New York City. It is very impressive.

The staircase sides are made from separate panes of glass.

The side panels are made from a continuous, seam-free piece of glass exceeding 30 feet at its longest point.

People were going up and down the staircase just for fun.
